The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is an international patent law treaty, concluded in 1970. It provides a unified procedure for filing patent applications to protect inventions in each of its contracting states. A patent application filed under the PCT is called an international application, or PCT application.

A PCT application is usually advised in the following cases:

1. Application has to be filed in 4 or more jurisdictions.
2. Applicant is unsure of all the target markets and may need additional time to decide which jurisdictions to choose. PCT gives additional 18-19 months for you to make decision on patenting jurisdictions compared to convention route.
3. Applicant is looking for an investment before taking the invention to multiple countries and hence, might need additional time.
4. Application has to be filed in multiple countries in different languages and time available is short.

So, a single filing of a PCT application can be made with a Receiving Office (RO) in one language.  A PCT application does not itself result in the grant of a patent.
